Celebrations

 

We were saddened to learn that William J. (Bill) Higginson passed away on October 11, 2008. Most haiku poets have encountered Bill Higginson through one of his books. He has made significant contributions to the haiku world; he will be greatly missed. The Sketchbook editors would like to include a tribute memorial to William J. Higginson in the November 31, 2008 issue. Please send any written contributionrememberancepoem, haibun or recollection to the Editors  memorial@poetrywriting.org

Greetings readers. In this third year Anniversary Issue we are presenting seventy-four writers from fourteen countries.

Sixteen poets from nine countries submitted forty haiku to the October kukai.   Congratulations to the winners of the "migrating birds" haiku:

The theme of the monthly haiku thread was any of the following: cat(s), witche(s), jack-0-lantern(s), shadow(s); or any images that convey the sense of "halloween" and / or Samhain. Eighteen poets from ten countries submitted eighty haiku. Read the entire October thread.

Featured this month are Eiko Yachimoto's translantion of Sugita Hisajo's haiku, A Wave of MoonlightWomen Poets of Japan. In addition, Yachimoto has written an essay describing her visit to Hisajo's estate in Japan.

Rengay Through The Seasons by Vaughn Seward featuring rengay numbers seven through nine of the year long rengay project hosts guest writer Daniela Bullas.

Sketchbook Global Correspondents have sent the following reports this month: Sally EvansScotland, Jeff Spahr-Summers—South Africa, Aju Mukhopadhyay—India, HelenBar-Lev—Israel.

The Book Fair features four book: The Reagan Psalms CD by A. D. Winans, Hesitant Commitments by Trish Campblell, Spirit Harvest by Trish Shields, and As If byAngela Consolo Mankiewicz. If you are looking for a good read, try one of these books.

Contributing Editor, Jeff Spahr-Summers, creator and editor of The Poetry Victims, treats October readers to the art of Candace Byington, Amy Kohut, and Juanne Peck; the featured poets are Michael Lira, Jared Smith, Buddy Wakefield, and J. A. Spahr-Summers.

Congratulations to Trish Shields who has Anti-War Poetry displayed at the New Westminster Art Gallery in BC during the month of October.

November 2008 Kukai:

  • Announcing "old diary" November 2008 Kukai: The November 2008 Kukai theme is "old diary". Use the exact words "old diary" in the haiku. No more than a total of three haiku may be submitted. Haiku submitted to the kukai should not be workshopped, appear on-line in forums, or in print. Read the full details here.

November 2008 Sketchbook thread:
