The Price
The price of love is
a steep one,
as the saying states:
“costing nothing less than everything”,
perhaps the problem is that there is never a ‘sale’,
wherein the price is cut in half,
where what is asked demands not quite so much
time and sacrifice.
“Less than everything” love is sought out with acuteness,
a close enough imitation but it leaves the heart empty,
at times more desolate than before this ‘love’ found.
The desire to receive back is what is really sought,
to be seen, heard and not boxed in because our essence
understood,
yet often (or always?), what is desired, demanded, is not
returned.
Objects can be owned and manipulated, not so those loved,
whether in a total “cost nothing less than everything”
or the “less than everything”. For love opens deeper wounds,
the healing an arduous road filled with both joy
and deep suffering;
love calls to a deep inner change.
Only that love which is true, after much struggle
can lead to a deeper inner seeing that leads home,
for our inner dwelling is hidden by needs and thirst,
that no one can quench for our hearts longing is for the
infinite.
The joy and suffering that accompanies our journey are equal,
each a goad driving forward and at times backwards,
but there is nowhere to go back to. No it is the sacrifice
that love demands, that leads to healing, to seek for what is
good
for the one loved and to also allow oneself to be loved back
in the same manner. To go back is to repeat the cycle
there is no escape in our search for love.
True love can seem harsh; it is not gentle, very demanding and
yes,
compassionate in ways undreamed of before love experienced.
It is a terrain uncharted for each of us. Be it love for
friends, family,
and children and of course spouses.
To love the essence of another is to love God.
For those we truly love show us beauty and mystery
that can never be plummeted, for our relationships constantly
change us; our speaking, laughing and our working
together are the interplay of growth, death and change.
