perfect-bound paperback book, and in the digital edition, both

EDITORIAL POLICY
Please read carefully.
Modern English Tanka is a quarterly journal—a print literary
journal with digital editions—dedicated to publishing and
promoting fine English tanka (including tanka written in
cinquain and cinqku set forms). We are interested in both
traditional and innovative verse of high quality and in all
serious attempts to assimilate the best of the Japanese waka/tanka
genres into a continuously developing English short verse
tradition. In addition to verse, we publish articles, essays,
book notes & reviews, interviews, letters to the editor, etc.,
related to tanka.
MET specializes in single tanka but tanka in sets and
sequences will be considered as well. Collaborative tanka
sequences are generally not wanted. While the five-line
criterion is generally definitive for tanka, MET will consider
variant forms on an individual basis (like everything else!)
Serious poetry and adult themes are appreciated. Doggerel and
anything that is pornographic or in any way nasty, hateful,
bigoted, or partisan political, will not be accepted. All such
judgments will be made at the sole discretion of the editor.
BOOK REVIEWS AND NOTES:
Modern English Tanka, generally, will solicit book reviews
directly. We cannot guarantee that we will review unsolicited
books sent in for review; we may choose to review such an
unsolicited book or not. All books received, solicited or
unsolicited, will not be returned, whether reviewed or not.
Book reviewers receive a biographical entry on the Contributor
Notes page. We publish “Book Notes” and announcements at our
sole discretion. If you wish to submit a fully written Book
Note (300 words, maximum) along with a copy of the book, we
will consider publishing it; no guarantees. No biographical
entry is published with a Book Note. For both book reviews and
notes/announcements, we will only publish those which have
some relevance to the scope of Modern English Tanka, i.e.,
tanka and related forms such as cinquain, cinqku, etc.,
specifically or in general.
ARTICLES & ESSAYS:
Modern English Tanka is definitely interested in serious
articles and essays of interest to our target audience. Any
length, up to chapter length, may be acceptable (a good target
range is from 1,500 to 2,500 words). We are very sensitive to
even the appearance of copyright-infringement, so, be certain
that you have, and provide, any necessary permissions for
works quoted in an article or essay. (U.S.A.
Copyright Information) We may solicit articles and essays
but we also are glad to receive them after queries or even
over the transom. We seek to promote the assimilation of the
best of the Japanese waka/tanka genres into a continuously
developing English short verse tradition.
The criteria for publication of articles and essays are that
the topic be of interest to our readers, that the author have
something fresh to say, and that the article or essay be well
written. We are interested in items on various levels of
expertise and scholarship and do not expect all items to be
written at the same technical level.
We do NOT exclude good articles simply because they propose
any idea with which we do not agree. We do NOT exclude good
articles simply because the author is someone not in favor
with us, with readers, or with the tanka community in general.
We do NOT publish inferior articles on the basis of their
agreement with our various positions on relevant matters. In
short, the publication of articles and essays is decided upon
according to our editorial criteria and not by favoritism nor
by our antipathies. Concomitantly, publication of any article
or essay in MET cannot reasonably be, and should not
be, taken as MET’s endorsement of the propositions and
ideas contained therein. We publish, as we are able, both
sides of important tanka questions and issues.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:
Letters to the editor of Modern English Tanka are welcome and
may be published in the currently open issue. Please put "MET:
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR" on the subject line of your email to
distinguish letters to the editor from other correspondence.
ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS:
Any work submitted in any language other than English will be
considered for publication only if accompanied by an English
translation for simultaneous publication. For submissions in
languages other than English, it is a good practice to query
the Editor before submitting.
GRAPHIC ART:
Modern English Tanka does not solicit graphic arts for any of
its editions.
NO SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS:
Please do not submit anything on offer anywhere else. We are
not in the market for works under consideration for
publication elsewhere. Please, also, do not re-submit any work
that MET has turned down previously.
NOT PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED:
We primarily seek to publish fine verse and articles that have
not been previously published. Each poet is personally
responsible for noting in the submission any previous
publication of any submitted work. We, of course, reserve the
discretion to select previously published work of
extraordinary merit, from time to time.
PLEASE NOTE:
This is an edited review. We DO NOT publish everything that is
submitted to us. We reserve the right to exercise editorial
discretion in ALL cases. If, for any reason, you cannot cope
with rejection, better not to make submissions. We use only a
portion of the submissions that we receive. There are plenty
of other websites which are unedited and where you can post
your poems with no editorial interference if that is what you
seek. We do occasionally publish poets who have previously
been published in Modern English Tanka; that does not mean
that anyone has carte blanche to be published here. When we do
reject a poem or poems, we generally will not notify you
individually. The issue is posted online just before the print
publication; those submissions published are accepted and
those that are not published were not accepted. Occasionally,
we may want to offer some editorial comment, assistance,
guidance, etc., in which case, we will respond to your
submission before publication.
