Short Poems about the Chesapeake Bay
in the captain's
car
I wrestle the dog
for the front seat
Down among
the bayside cottages,
the road is more pothole
than pavement
somewhere near North East.
the old lady boat
waits by the winter pier;
an empty oyster shell
on the beach
The skipjack's head
turns up into the wind,
"Hard-alee!"
On his knees culling oysters
he doesn't have to duck.
a shadow without hands,
he watches the winter moon
among the rusty brown leaves,
a strange hawk
the bay breezes
at cross currents with
the wind off Bulle Rock;
so it is with
the affairs of men
mooned by a Canada goose— it’s that kind of day
amid the rocks of the jetty . . . only rocks
the singing of snails:
that’s the sound
of this spring breeze
pearls in a jug of clay—
that’s the country life
for me
they brought
the dawn to me,
these gladsome pines
I throw back
the quilt of stars
and rise
