Sketchbook

Cristian Mocanu, RO

Haiku

Limes near the sports hall—
their fragrance, added to both
triumph and defeat

palo boracho
where the roadside bar once stood:
heat wave in Chaco!

late summer heat wave
just the alders lean over
what's left of the brook

the date palm's shade—
a promise of sweetness for
weary travelers

the cardinal stops
the Vatican car, gets off:
the cypresses!

King sago palm tree:
it seems much less out—of—place
under the moonlight

plane trees in the park—
so happy to hear even
cuckoos sing from them

Climbing Poem

Croatian Lyrics' Website

Like finding old friends,
this page defends souls.
Time bends without breaking.

But still nostalgia tends
to shift trends, suddenly,
make amends for indifference.

Even as it offends
materialists, it mends hearts.
It sends wonderful signals.

Beauty meets all demands:
Soft tamburica*-bands, klapas**
join hands to bring your longing home at last.

*tamburica—instrument similar-but not identical-to a mandolin or banjo. Usually played by bands of 5 or 7.

** klapa—a (men's) choir, specific to the Adriatic coast, usually made up of (semi-) professionals, hired to serenade young ladies with beautiful a cappella songs.

Climbing Poem

92, Passeig De Gracia*

Waves made of stone
an artist's own bid
to disown "Mare Nostrum".

Drilled into the sea,
windows overlook tree tops:
everyone's free to dream.

leaves made of metal
show much mettle, creeping:
hedge nettle or ivy?

"La Pedrera" stands out:
it's all about daring
to shout your fantasy!

*This is a climbing poem I wrote about one of the houses designed by Gaudi (La Pedrera). The title is its address in Barcelona, Spain.

Villanelle

Ambivalent Life

Your body lives one life, your soul lives two.
Your soul was dragged, your body went away.
The mind must figure out just what to do.

You take a walk, the new place tries to woo
Your senses, but your inner fibers sway.
Your body lives one life, your soul lives two.

Satellite dishes, clubs and podcasts, too
Connect you with your past tense every day...
The mind must figure out just what to do.

Of the two worlds, right now, which one is true?
Which one is really yours? No one can say
Your body lives one life, your soul lives two.

Your memory's bonsai suddenly grew!
At home, December; here, eternal May!
The mind must figure out just what to do...

Come, body, soul, and toss the coin; for who
of all the migrants found a better way?
Your body lives one life, your soul lives two,
The mind must figure out just what to do.

Amor De Lohn

Can I still love you and not hold your hand?
Between your steps and mine, one thousand miles!
They say we're building our house on sand...
Can I still love you and not hold your hand?
Yes, our possibilities expand:
Broadband, webcams, headphones, virtual smiles...
Yet, can I love you and not hold your hand?
Between your steps and mine, one thousand miles!
