Note: Evening Bells (Вечерний звон) by Ivan Rebroff; English translation of its lyrics:

Those ev'ning bells those ev'ning bells,
How many a tale their music tells
Of youth and home and that sweet time,
When last I heard their soothing chime...

These season words or kigo are from the 1977-78 Haiku Journal. Originally the list was selected from Japanese saijiki (kigo "dictionaries") and translated by Kiyoko Tokutomi. Over time words have been added that have seasonal resonance for our predominantly North American members. We present these lists as a guide and aid to English-language writers who want to think about this aspect of haiku in their own writing, as well as in appreciating the haiku of other poets.

Summer kigo: “Father’s Day” Spring/Humanity and Observances from World Kigo Database (WKD)  http://worldkigodatabase.blogspot.com/2006/11/womens-day-international.html

Third Sunday: Father’s Day. This is a holiday imported from the United States. It is not as widely adhered to as Mother’s Day, though. Gifts are given to fathers and can include such things as belts, wallets and neckties or things the child or children make themselves.

Summer kigo: “Tsutsuhime, Tsu-tsu-Hime”: summer/seasons from World Kigo Database (WKD), Four Deities of Summer: http://darumamuseumgallery.blogspot.ca/2010/03/saho-hime-tatsuta-hime.html  “She got her name from the word for well 井筒, izutsu, well curb, well kerb. She is the protector of water for the fields and rice paddies.”

Mid-summer kigo: “Absention, abstinence in Satsuki (satsuki imi)”: midsummer/Humanity and Observances from World Kigo Database (WKD): http://wkdfestivalsaijiki.blogspot.ca/2010/05/abstinence-in-satsuki.html  “Satsuki was the month of planting the rice fields and thus the god of the fields was welcomed back from his retreat in the mountains. This also was a time for abstention or abstinence. During the whole of the fifth lunar month, couples had to be abstinent (and use their energy for planting rice).”

Summer kigo “month without water (minazuki)”: late summer/Humanity from World Kigo Database (WKD): http://washokufood.blogspot.ca/2009/06/minazuki-sweets.html  “These sweets were the poor man’s equivalent of a royal treat in June when the emperor in Kyoto was served beans on shaved ice that was taken into a store room in the winter. ..this refers to life without refrigerators in the Edo period. The white paste refers to snow. The red beans (azuki) are auspicious to ward off evil. The triangular form reminds us of ice and colls the mind.”
