These season words or kigo are from the 1977-78 Haiku Journal. Originally the list was selected from Japanese saijiki (kigo "dictionaries") and translated by Kiyoko Tokutomi. Over time words have been added that have seasonal resonance for our predominantly North American members. We present these lists as a guide and aid to English-language writers who want to think about this aspect of haiku in their own writing, as well as in appreciating the haiku of other poets.

Third Sunday: Father’s Day. This is a holiday imported from the United States. It is not as widely adhered to as Mother’s Day, though. Gifts are given to fathers and can include such things as belts, wallets and neckties or things the child or children make themselves.

Summer kigo “month without water (minazuki)”: late summer/Humanity from World Kigo Database (WKD): http://washokufood.blogspot.ca/2009/06/minazuki-sweets.html  “These sweets were the poor man’s equivalent of a royal treat in June when the emperor in Kyoto was served beans on shaved ice that was taken into a store room in the winter. ..this refers to life without refrigerators in the Edo period. The white paste refers to snow. The red beans (azuki) are auspicious to ward off evil. The triangular form reminds us of ice and colls the mind.”
