The Arrival of Bad News

Silence
slips quietly
out the window, and I
cannot find the strength or the voice
to cry.

Anticipation

It is
a pleasure when
rubbing her back, I sense
she will soon turn over and rub
me back.

A Shared Meal

The scent
of rosemary
on the grilled lamb chops and
on my fingers and lips, and now
on yours.

Construction Site Concerto

Click thwack
Thwack click click thwack
the sound of hammers sings
along with wood and metal beams
thwack click.

Beneath the Jacaranda Tree

Waves and
waves of light and
shadow through the trees and
waves and waves of sound calling me
to rest.

Small Victories in Parenting

In time
each day becomes
an anniversary –
this morning the toothpaste lid on
again.

Homesick

Squashed dates
and camel dung
dot sidewalks throughout town –
in Aqaba, a longing for
some gum.

Finances

Waiting,
watching the stock
market go up and down,
I'm almost glad I don't have much
money.

Barcelona

A shot
of cheap brandy
in my morning coffee –
I see the beauty of Miró’s
women.

Revisionist Mythology

Plastic
porpoises swim
across the room in pairs
as students give the old Greek myths
updates,
though one of them,
the porpoises that is, seems
deflated with its role in this
version.
