Ghazal

Three Ghazals of Mir Taqi Mir

What is in the heart of idols

what is in the heart of idols, I don't know
will God appear from 'neath the veil, I don't know

this only I know that I've known nothing:
this too after a lifetime I've come to know

You are everything this everybody knows
Yet, how is God actually I don't know

that I would die in love was known to me
in its beginning was the end I did know

love, O healer, is an ailment of the heart
bless me now with a cure, if you know

Our existence is just a bubble

our existence is just a bubble
like a mirage is all spectacle

the softness of her lips indeed
is like that of a rose petal

at her door again and again
a worry personified I am

as I speak, she retorts:
this voice is of a ruined man

Mir, with wine fully laden
appear her eyes half open!

Kindly excuse me buddy

kindly excuse me buddy, I am drunk already
give me just a cup empty, I am drunk already

see, it is inebriation that has my talk confused
okay, blame me if you wish, I am drunk already

I can't help if my gait is a bit unsteady
hold no grudge against me, I am drunk already

friday prayer isn't running, what's the hurry ?
wait a while, I come too, though I'm drunk already

you are a brittle glass, as touchy as hell, Mir,
don't pick argument with me, I'm drunk already
