A Hymn to Forefathers

Based on the Rigveda, Book X, Hymn 15

O Forefathers, Departed Spirits in Heaven dwelling,
Come forth to bless us with Thy grace
In our home at Thy proper place
Accept our worship and our offering
So that secure remains our race

May not Thy sins haunt us with grief
May not the joys we reap be brief
May we get light from Thy deeds
May Thou be in our tasks and thought

Grant us riches and energy
Favour with heroic progeny
O God Adorers, Fathers of yore -
All whom we know and also know not!

A Rigvedic Hymn, translated from Sanskrit by Sunil Uniyal recently, for the 'Let Us Pray' section of Sketchbook, Nov-Dec 2011 issue. The Rigveda (one of the four Vedas) is one of the earliest texts composed in human history, going back to circa 1500-2000 BC.
