Winter
Night
After a
painting by Nancy Peach*
I
remember
the way it was
one winter night
picture-card pretty
all serenity and expectation
afternoon hours
slipped away ––– fading
into evening blue
day finally asleep
in a slumber of tranquility
cresting the hill
silent sentinels
watched with steel intentness
hushed in snow covers
a winter moon
wistfully watchful
sifting a silent glow
over its probing scan
windows latched
drapes drawn
all din tucked within
a little cedar box
‘Twas the night before...

First Snow
After a painting by Mike Malm*
flecks
of butterfly leaves
still spangle their autumn orange
like a river of white
snow spans across a rift
a young girl I see
standing in a pool of awe
immersed in her gaze
amazed am I by her smile
an aurora of sunfire
licks the edges of her hair
her brown shawl hugs her arm
a copper pail huddles its warmth
unfazed by the morning chill
wrapped up by this first snow thrill
a fleeting scene soon to melt away
her contented smile will linger awhile
