Ekphrastic Ottava Rima ~ Magic Garden

Karin Anderson, AU

Introduction

Under the reign of Queen Victoria, in a more sentimental era than this one, and when love was not displayed in the open, flowers were invested with their own language and floriography dictionaries came into vogue.

Magic Garden

The magic garden sprouts seeds in our heart,
Seduced by whispered breeze and bird’s Spring songs;
A haven where these word-strung flowers start,
And beauty behind fence facade belongs;
From slow push to power’s surge soon imparts
Calm-breath wonder as we find we prolong
Spells, to meet and greet the garden at dawn.
Yet, night’s floodlights can flash love on the lawn.

And the language of the flowers is profound.
Divine angels guide flower’s buds until
Their fragrance wafts soft velvet words around
Each flower’s special meaning it fulfils.
Writers find these dictionary words astound,
Using flower‘s floriography skills.
The Queen Victorian decoded book
Is unveiled when we Magic Garden look.

In shafts of sunlight Cupid statue rests,
Then fires his arrow so true love won’t leave,
As forget-me not’s nods faithfully bless.
Lavender lingers to heal as we grieve;
Wisteria trails tresses to welcome guests,
And dahlia’s gratitude helps us believe
Flower’s words are magic’s discovery,
As I know sweetbriar means poetry.
