The
Sleeping Princes' of Venice 1957
There was annie
o'neal
long red hair
three layers of eyelashes
flat chest, small waist.
first there were pills,
and then came the needle,
then came death.
sold her body for fun,
then for a habit.
she paid the price with her soul
sleep my princess
then there was the other annie
she had lots of names
bicycle annie /little annie
she was my soul sister
we were young once but got old fast
pot, pills, then the needles
the kiss of the needle went to the blood
to tell us to have fun/lets have a party
days nights weeks years
good night my friends
and bingo, speeding down the boardwalk
lots of love and lots of life
she went off the cliff
scared for life but beauty shone through
oh, god, why??? 49 knife wounds to take her soul
I see her little soul all over venice
on every sunny day
the laughter,
the beauty of the sunset
the years come and go
her love is always with me
good night my friend
Patty who will remember her
but you are in my heart
will always know and love you
till it's time for me to go to sleep
good night, my friends
mary walsh, a mother of the needle,
black tracks going to her heart
where there was once youth and innocence
years in prisons and jails
then body of wrinkles and scars of life
then death was welcome,
too tired to run any more
good night, my friend
when it's time for me to go to sleep,
we will be young,
our scars will be gone.
there will be laughter
and hope again
'till then my loves
sleep tight
Ladies of Venice
the dealer deals
and pays the price
in the end
nothing else matters
