On a
sun-washed
bluff, high
and lifted up
among trees
of orange, bronze,
gold, and scarlet,
stands a massive
gray stone,
like a primitive
goddess, union
of woman and animal,
deity perhaps
of harvest colors.
Her alligator head
overlooks a blue
lake, bordered
by golden grain fields
and green valleys.
I bow to the beauty,
the mystery, knees
purple with asters.
