The Sky Sometimes Darkens

she leaned against the gate
and I, hoping the gate wouldn't break, leaned against her

we talked and laughed and made plans
that flew back and forth like a kite on a Sunday afternoon

we tasted the breeze and felt the sky
and might have gone for ice cream

but forever isn't always and a gate isn't time
the sky sometimes darkens and a breeze often dies
