Summer Scenes in the Sonoran

elf owls nesting
in the stately Saguaro
a vermillion sunset

the old gold mine
abandoned in the desert
a laughing baby

heat wave

no money left
to buy bottled water

strolling through the park,
her shade umbrella in hand

summer butterfly

a ramshackle house
beneath the cottonwoods
laundry in the wind

a faint trickle
in the wide arroyo
dust devils

only wheel tracks
among the mesquite

Aqua Fria River

racing through brush
the roadrunner disappears
wildflowers in bloom

along Indian Trail
the skull of an ox
a speck of silver

lightning strikes
through billowed gray clouds

Mogollon Rim

Cinquain Sequence

Beware the False Gift

What now
a Trojan Horse?
Those sails were deceptive!
The prize of freedom is ruthless
watching.

A gift!
Truly, you jest!
No soldier leaves prizes
for his enemy to plunder!
A trick!

Beware

the gift of death,
a fatal sting awaits.
Keep the gates barred and man the watch
all hours.
