Guidelines
for submitting work to Simply Haiku.
Submissions that
deviate from these guidelines will not be read,
sent back, or used.
1. Include a short 5 non-run-on sentence biography. Readers
don’t
have time to read lengthy bios, and your submissions, if
accepted,
will speak more of your poetry and artistry than credits
that read
like an “I’m trying to impress you sheet.”
2. Submit a clear, visible .jpg or .tiff photograph of
yourself
with good resolution.
3. Text documents should be submitted in attachment under
the
following rules:
- a document in Word.doc, saved as Word 97-2003
- font Times New Roman
- size 12
- single spaced
- no formatting, no tabs, no decorative alignment, etc –
just clean
sheet with easily readable text in a standard layout
- do not include images inside the text. If images come with
the
text, send them in an attachment and point the place of each
image
inside the text with [photo /name-of-the-file/] mark. Make
sure all
names of all image files correspond with how they are
represented
in the text.
4. Edit your work, check for misspellings, poor grammar,
omissions, and typos. Submissions requiring a lot of editing
will
not be used.
5. We do not allow those whose works are accepted to review
online
the placement of their work or to tell our staff how to lay
out
their work.
6. Submit no less than 10 haiku or haiga per submission. We
no
longer print a person’s single poem or haiga. We will
showcase five
of a selected poet’s works, giving readers a broader
perspective of
one’s style, voice, and talent.
7. Submit no more than three works when submitting haibun.
8. With tanka, no more than 2 tanka may be published per
poet. You
can send 6 or more tanka. All tanka must be written
utilizing the
traditional S/L/S/L/L meter indigenous to tanka. We don’t
accept
tanka deviating from these guidelines. No need for authors’
bios
and photos with tanka submission, but only their names and
countries of origin/residence.
9. Haiga must be professional and well laid out. Tanka or
haiku on
a haiga must be traditional in meter, and be in harmony with
its
background and be legible. Media used for the background art
can be
varied, but it needs to be well done. No lazy quick sketches
or
childish drawings, please. Poetry must be on the graphic or
photo
along with its author’s name or print mark. In haiga, the
background as well as the poem must be good. A great
photograph,
sketch, or painting with a so-so haiku or tanka won’t do.
Submit
your finest work.
10. All book reviews, interviews, and essays must be well
written,
researched, and edited. Query Saša Važić or Robert D. Wilson
before
submitting if you have questions.
11. Renga will be accepted, but not renku or rengay. Since
they
are composed by two or more persons, multiple submissions
are not
necessary and due to space concerns, these works will not be
submitted by individual bios or photographs. If they have
been
previously published, they will not be accepted.
12. No work will be read outside of the submission deadlines
and
will be immediately returned to you for re-submission.
13. Simply Haiku is a showcase for English
language Japanese short
form poetry. As such, we do not accept avant garde or
experiemntal
verse. All poetry submitted must conform to the S/L/S etc.
meter
indigenous to Japanese short form poetry.
