Pennypack Creek

Along the banks of the Pennypack
yesterday is just beyond the bend.
You can look back by turning up river
and disappearing into the tree line,
find a spot where you can't see the road
or the joggers and can barely hear the cars
honking along Roosevelt Boulevard.
Shut your mind. Close your ears.
Let time drift with the current
and you are there, in the past,
listening for black bear in the bushes
and watching for Leni Lenape
paddling by in their canoes.

Absence

I lost my mother
and a tooth
this year

both were needed
and will be missed

the absence of one
caused a gap in my smile

as for the other,
the hole is so big
I'm still climbing out of it.

Think of a Number

some count lives in years,
others in mistakes.
how many have you made?
