P.S. Re: George Tsongas,

As you all may know, our dear North Beach poet and friend George Tsongas has sadly had a severe accident. It is still unclear exactly how this accident happened but according to George's son Alec, the accident is due to yet another unfortunate incident of George having fallen down on his way home after having dinner here in North Beach about two weeks ago. Since George is getting increasing frail (following two similar accidents within the last year or so), this last accident (mainly affecting George's neck) is particularly serious. Currently, George is hospitalized at Kindred Hospital and recovery center in San Leandro. While stabilized and heavily supported via respiratory aid and pain medicines, his overall condition is, fortunately, currently stable and improving. Having visited George this Saturday, I recognize the very important need and responsibility of our creative community to both send out our positive thoughts and sympathy for his recovery, as well as to think of ideas in terms of how to keep him safe once he is able to return home to his apartment. Since George's family members are rather spread out and only able to make occasional hospital visits, I think it would be wonderful for as many of us as possible to make a visit to George to encourage him along the way to recovery. I also imagine George would be greatly encouraged by anything that visitors could think of bringing along (flowers, artwork, "live" music/readings, etc) in terms of enlightening the rather sterile environment/position George is more or less "fixed" in during this very, very challenging period of time.

For direction information (driving or via Bart) to Kindred Hospital, Benedict Drive, San Leandro please call:

Kindred Hospital: 1 510 357 8302

For info on George's status:

or:

or:

I will be keeping George in my thoughts and prayers and hope that you will too.

Philip Hackett
