Left Undone

So one day I see someone I know in need, and I do nothing about it,
even though perhaps I could help.

Yet knowing that everyone can’t be helped, it is dropped.

Then I see someone on a street corner asking for money,
or food, or work, and again they are passed by,
for they are most likely drunks or drug addicts,
even though perhaps they do look cold and hungry.

So not to be taken in, they too are passed by.

A neighbor’s husband beats his wife, or perhaps it is the wife,
who abuses the husband, or children being ill treated;

yet it is not my business, so it is dropped.

Little by little a wall goes up, excuses abound for not helping,
why should I after all get involved,
am I my brother's keeper?,
besides I will be taken advantage of.

Multiply that times a million,
or perhaps a billion acts of kindness left undone;
for good reasons can be given for each and every one,
until one day perhaps I will be the one passed by,
in need but left alone,
by those who fear being taken advantage of.
