Victor P. Gendrano, US

Tanka

she shrieks
at the mirror
and cries she is heavy
I reassure her
she’s just healthy

she keeps pushing
the unruly hair
crowding her unmade face
were it as easy
forgetting him

the cactus plant
outlives and outlasts
even man himself
who then is the master
of the universe

again, she pauses
in front of him
in her new sports bra
his eyes remain focused
on his book

sign of the times
random violence
and senseless killings
fill the headline news
throughout the land
