Rhymed Couplets
Two Lefts Don’t Make a Right, But Three Do
What did I do to deserve this scorn,
with the sun so high this early morn?
All atop with their noses high,
all flashing looks as they pass by.
That twisted fate leads but to the start.
They’re never getting to where they aren’t.
Up and down with left and right
intertwined. It’s truly a sight.
Am I not good, are we not good
enough to walk back to where I stood?
Going up never seems to solve
the problems that e’re need resolve.
Going up just leads back down
left and right go round and round.
Now here we are, him and me
all because of the decree.
Let them walk and talk about
how he and I got kicked out.
Let them go till they’ve all learned --
they’ll never get to where they weren’t.
*An ekphrastic poem focuses on a well known work of art--usually paintings, photographs, or statues. The ekphrastic poem interprets, inhabits, confronts, and speaks about the subject of the art work--it addresses the art images. In this case Eric Pederson's poem interprets the etching of M. C. Esher, "Ascending and Descending".
