Winter Afternoon

math class
I count each snowflake
on the window*

the whiteness of snow—
my car needs a wash

between my pickup
and the school door
ice slide

end of shift—
the postman carries
a pair of skates

an empty rink—
the splayed paws of an old dog

deserted square—
the scent of mulled wine
fills the emptiness
