Shades of Melancholy

1

sun flowers wilt
in the lingering heat
no rain this week     /jd

turning from my porch lookout,
a pawlonia leaf lands     /ym

all morning
a cricket's courting song--
phone me at noon     /jd

first autumn storm
my cat has forgotten rain,
but soon remembers     /ym

silently, cloaking all
with grayness, the fog invades     /jd

Japanese ivy
clings to the broken fence,
the setting sun     /ym

2

late autumn
that small sound
through the autumn night,
a worm cries     /ym

listen in the autumn dusk
dead leaves blow through the garden       /jd

an owl
sitting in an apple tree
calling to his love     /ym

pheasants in tall grass
suddenly swoop toward the woods--
a gun shot       /jd

and the hunting dog howls
tracking the fallen bird     /ym

in the night
lightning criss-crosses the sky
a scarecrow       /jd
