Lovers Lament

We walk hand in hand
Like giddy lovers laughing
After a rollercoaster ride
Smelling the heady aroma coming
From Martha’s Coffee Shop
Eyes feasting on the city landscape
An armada of images taking hold:
Saturday strollers
Dogs on leashes playing with the
Minds of their masters
Young mothers pushing baby carriages
Temporarily erasing your fears
Of our seventeen year age difference
Last night’s passion stirring the juices
Inside me yet again
Your arm linked to mine
As my mind wanders wondering
If we can make it through untold tomorrows
Or will you disappear like a paper cup
Caught in the teeth of a winter storm

The Sound on the Stairs

People are coming up the stairs
They are coming from here
there
and everywhere
I have not been out of the house
for a long time, but I know it’s winter
by the heavy boots their voices wear

Portrait

I open your old railroad watch
given to you by your father
see grandfather in his suit and tie
see his/your life sweeping by in the
Seconds Hand
haunting memories rattle around
inside my head
like a pair of hollow dice the
minute hand stuck at high noon
like a hangman’s noose swinging
in the wind

Reality

the look in her eyes told me
I didn’t exist
did not would not be missed
she a slick-shift high-gear sports car
hot-wired to another guy
it’s the way of life
it’s the way of love
gone up in smoke
FINITO
left behind like skid marks
on a well traveled highway
