Free Verse

evening on the dunes

it's warm tonight
I sit here on the sand
watching the moon rise
and feel the specters
of summers past
the breeze from the ocean
the song of the surf
somewhere down the beach
a fire ring sending smoke and
embers in the air
broken wisps of song
carry on the air
your arm around me
I walk down the beach
heading for home
leaving a trail of
single footprints
you're in my heart
when are you
coming home

merlot moon

and the muse comes to visit
or was it the mango sun
and the green flash
that woke my
slumbering pen
or "just a memory
of a love that
used to be"?
where are we
she questioned
as she brushed
stardust from
her eyes
and shook sand
from her rumpled clothes
"why am I
naked and laughing
in the moonlight?
whose parrot is that
pulling the cork
from my bottle of wine?
Ho, Pirate of my soul,
thief of my heart,
Prince of my dreams
come back here
and do that again!!!
Her laughter lilting
on the sunrise

Clueless

How sad
those children
that think
old people
never lived
they have
no idea
of the fires
that burned
fevers that raged
thirsts slaked
chances taken
all to become
the appearance
of white haired
little old men
and ladies on the lanai
in rocking chairs weaving
coconut hats and
Smiling
oh, the stories
we will never tell
and some
fires still burn

In another life

she said laughing
I was a trust banker
and a wife
I worked
to put him through school
then I was a mother
and I designed jewelry
then I was divorced
and in another life
I was a bartender
to put myself through school
that was another life
then I married this
great guy
and I worked to
support us
while he built his business
one day he said
"I don't need you
anymore
I am successful"
and I raised my
boy alone
that was another life
I was always
a single mom
in another life
now I am
building
my own business
putting myself through
school
I am working on
my Master's degree
maybe one day
I will have
mastered this
other life
living my life

I can't help you this time

in all your knowledge of karma
have you forgotten
to take another's pain
even in love
inhibits their growth?
Let them choose their pain
or not..........sympathize
do not empathize
it stunts your growth
and their's
I love you enough
not to drink the
hemlock for you
I love you enough
to honor your path
and your choices
I promise to cry
at your wedding
and dance at
your funeral
because
I Love You
