Haiku

snow flurries
and still, rose petals
cling to life

redwings long gone
only wind rustles the reeds
winter stirs

a small finger points
and LOOK splits the silence
eagle in a pine

one after another
finds the endless horizon
prairie clouds

winter wind
chasing snowflakes
across the ice

eerie voices
explode the morning hush
loon conversing

the Ausable River
mayflies drop to its surface
trout rise to meet them

winter trees
the throb of brittle limbs
wakes me at dawn

winter sun
how difficult to discern
shadows on shadows

Tanka

the high ground…
do I seek it
to clarify my vision
or to pronounce
my superiority?
