Out of Silence

A Rentanka

on a foggy night
the geese break the silence
each call
into the darkness is
another way of seeing

the night's stillness
is disturbed
a crackle of dry leaves
under the mango tree
stray cats on the prowl

the arthritic twist
of a cold water stream
keeps moving onward
over the bent shoulders
of aging rocks and dead trees

rhythm of the sea
bashing against the rocks
here on retreat
i'm calmed and lulled
into a praise worthy peace

a girl's flip-flop
left on a sandbar
the only pink
against thousands of pebbles
and other possibilities

cartoons on TV
i watch with amusement
the pink panther
a favourite of children
and too their parents

sky watching
the 'w' in
cassiopeia*
our starry guide
to the comet holmes

morning sky
this coolness
nineteen more days
to Christmas and mixed feelings
of joy and exhaustion

on a day of sleet
a flat tire
and a lost friendship

I'm almost afraid to look
at tomorrow's forecast

loud banging
breaking the silence
after so many months
a new look for
the burned out building

MarchDecember 2007

**Cassiopeia is a 'w' shaped constellation visible in the Northern Hemisphere.
