Without Words
I have some great
memories of him on the variety shows of the 50s and 60s. He was
a talent. From a friend who studied with him in Pairs I learned
that it was nearly impossible to get a word in edgewise when he
was out of character. Speaking six or seven languages he could
talk your ear off almost regardless of where you were from my
friend told me.
Today, when he died, I post the following "haiku like" verse as
tribute:

dead at eighty four
his last words were:

The Silent
Master
He moved
with quiet grace
silently speaking words—
boundless images of meaning
told all.
His
great
passion moved
us to high pleasure—
laughter and tears—immense delight;
ageless motion and deft movement—
joyful and sad smiles
were his art;
Marcel
