Rengay

He Arrives at the Kitchen

Clump of red clover—
a bumblebee flies right back
to the same blossom.

He arrives at the kitchen,
but does not remember why.

At the Bar-B-Q
I recognize an old chum—
what did we call him?

For the seventh time,
I look up how to spell it—
French word "fricassee".

She swallows some escargot—
forgetting her allergy.

Nest of Rock swallows—
the loudest chick gets fed
again and again.

...Grinding the Grist...*

What is novel about this Rengay is that it was written simultaneously in two haiku formats (and two themes). Vaughn likes to write in the 2-3-2 rhythm format and Zhanna prefers something closer to the 5-7-5 syllable format. We were both willing to write in the other's preferences but in the end we decided it would be fun to see if it was possible to write each verse in both formats.

Since it was written in the two formats, you may find it interesting to view them side by side in this worksheet.

Please be sure to check out the notes and technical details by clicking on the "Project" button at the top of the first worksheet.
