A Renga

Waiting for Thelma

after the rain;
tadpoles wriggling
in the wheel ruts                           01/sm

arriving on a tractor—
the farmer's bride—to—be               02/bk

just back and already
under the eaves of the barn
swallows building their nest             03/mv

scrambled eggs in the baby's hair
and so much laughter                     04/pg

full moon;
yellowed leaves
slowly spiral down                          05/sm

black shapes of bare trees
against the afterglow                     06/mv

Halloween eve
the witches about
we go trick or treating                    07/bk

not a ghost of a chance
she fell in love before dessert           08/pg

Elvis the witness—
in a chapel in Las Vegas
they say " I do"                              09/bk

door-to-door salesmen
offering eternal salvation                 10/sm

the sparrow he shot
plagued by feelings of guilt
almost all the time                         11/mv

written in his will—
two rifles for my son                       12/pg

fireworks fill the sky—
the man in the moon
is he watching too?                        13/bk

as dusk turns into dawn
a distant roll of thunder                  14/mv

morning star—
still wearing
last night's dress                           15/pg

his first washday—
face as pink as his laundry              16/sm

faded memory—
the scent of violets
in an old perfume bottle                  17/pg

halfway on our journey
we pour ourselves white sake          18/mv

lingering cold—
beads of condensation
inside the tent                              19/sm

on the smoldering embers—
a forgotten pot                              20/bk

kindled
by a glance
passion                                        21/mv

in the mirror
their reflections merge                    22/sm

fox tracks
across the frozen pond
going nowhere                               23/pg

snow!! out of the attic
his Flexible Flyer sled                      24/bk

tucked between
the dusty letters—
a Purple Heart                               25/pg

carnival parade
the whole town decorated               26/mv

community project—
armed with garbage bags
they head for the beaches               27/bk

under a kelp strand
a perfect sand dollar                       28/sm

veiled
by a thin cloud
the moon                                     29/mv

through the mist
a train whistle wails                        30/sm

autumn clarity—
no warm welcome
at the station                                31/pg

limousine sign
"waiting for Thelma"                        32/bk

County Fair
Aunt Louise's chutney
best in show again                         33/sm

caught in the spotlight—
a moth flutters about                      34/bk

lustily singing
tulips from amsterdam
under the shower                           35/mv

that old couple—
planting spring bulbs once again        36/pg
