The town of Waimea is located in the
South Kohala District of Hawaii's Big Island. It is the largest town
in the interior of the Big Island and located about 20 miles northeast
of the Waikoloa Resort area, 13 miles west of Honokaa, 22 miles west
of Waipio Valley and 18 miles south of Kapaau. Waimea lies in the
rolling green foothills above the Kohala Coast. Its population was
7,028 in 2000 but the town and surrounding areas are growing rapidly.
The estimated June 2006 population is 9,241.
February 3, 2007, Waimea Cherry Blossom Historic
Festival: Every February, delicate pink blossoms arrive in full force
in Church Row Park. This spectacular natural display is inspiration
for the Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival, which celebrates the
blending of Japanese and Hawaiian cultures.
