Sketchbook

Haiku

Elizabeth Howard, US

wooded hills
ridgebacks of snow
furrows of shadow

rain pattering—
the old man rearranges
his red hat feather

rain at the carnival
tears streak
the laughing clown's face

wreath on the door
the hand-made whirligig
has a broken wing

long-distance call
lying alone and cold
in the double bed

mother's chair
her cat rocking
alone in the dark

John Daleiden, US

snow on the gravestones
the names illegible
geese rise from the pond

winter sun—
in the long shadows
snow turns grey

January cold—
not even a sparrow
at my window

the shadow
of an old crow in flight—
deep winter cold

crocus buds
nestle in new snow—
the shadows deepen

Vaughn Seward, CA

cold night...
the squeak of car tires
in fresh snow

the locomotive
pulls into the station...
steam on frost

just short
of finishing his last name—
fresh-fallen snow

light snowfall—
the weather mocks my
shoveling efforts

Rita Odeh

calm sea—
wave by wave wet
the shore sand

cloudy morning—
on the neighbour's tree
a desired cherry

in my diary
spreading scents of old love
a dry lilac

morning cawing—
an abandoned nest
on a barren branch

late autumn—
the mirror exposes
a new grey hair

bowing
to get rid of a bee—
the boss

one hand clock
endlessly ticking in mind—

dark doorway—
scents of basil
lit the soul

silent night—
twinkling in mind
that far star

a door creaks
wind flows in—
inner darkness

first snowflakes
colour the whiteness
of a beggar's palm

turbulent waves
break at the shore—
silent mind

that moon—
every night, in my mirror
till morning

war dawn—
beneath the cracked bridge
dusty cactus

heavy rain—
throwing the umbrella
she starts dancing

new calendar—
sad memories torn to pieces
in the dustbin
