The Results

For the January 2007 Sketchbook kukai ninteen poets submitted 48 FREE FORMAT haiku on the theme JANUARY WEATHER. In a FREE FORMAT themed haiku there are no exact word requirements. Poets from these eight countries participated: Australia, Canada, Israel, Malaysia, Romania, Trinidad, United Kingdom, United States. Twelve poets voted. The poems and the number of votes received for each are printed below.

Epiphany frost*
the isolated hamlet

*Epiphany frost (Rom. Gerul Bobotezei) is a spell of bitter cold (anything between -10 and -20 degrees centigrade traditionally occurring on or around Jan. 6-th.

Along with thistles
the memory of bustards **
swept by the north wind.

** Bustard (otis tarda) once an appreciated game in the Far South of
Romania became extinct here in the 1960-s. The only major defeat for
animal conservationists in this country.
