Ekphrastic Couplets ~ Platypus

Bernard Gieske, US

Platypus

My ancestors were all human I think
About the platypus I wonder what to think

It lays its eggs but so do snakes
From those are how the young it makes

It has a bill like any duck I see
But it’s no bird I surely can agree

It certainly is not a lizard with flaws
Even though its limbs have spurs and claws

If it were a beaver I would surely know
Its broad, flat tail is deceiving me just now

Oh, it swims around quite well
Stays under water for a spell

Feeding on worms and shellfish and other animals
Using its long duckbill scooping up its sumptuous meals

A lot for a mother to consider
Even with only two in a litter

With webbed feet and all I am quite in awe
Glad that it is now protected by law
