Another Time

We called her Cowboy Urban. All the girls in the gym class giggling behind her back.

Cowboy Urban was very very bow-legged. In her navy blue bloomers and white sailor blouse, she looked like she had just gotten off a horse. Her hair was done up in a bun and she wore thick eyeglasses.

It was of a time when we did not want to go to gym to do somersaults on the mats and climb the ropes It was also when you did not have to go if you had your period.

Forest Park Junior High was just across the street from a beautiful park and the girls who were excused would gather for fun and games there. However, to make sure we did not take advantage, Cowboy kept a log of our ‘time’. The book on her knees as we waited to be checked off.

Tanned legs
Cycling down the road
those short shorts!
